Dehumanization
For our half term break, we had to read 2 books and write about a social issue. My chosen book was "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro and "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. These two novels include many social issues such as dehumanization, inequality and discrimination. I chose to write about dehumanization because the novel represents the same act of dehumanizing the characters but their detailed to how it is done, is very distinct from each other. I also wanted to understand what the word means by analyzing the text and evaluate on how they impact a characters appearance, actions, behaviors or even their overall characteristics. This is one of the work that I am very proud with because I was passionate about how dehumanization impacted the characters and how cruel it is. I was also proud of this work because I was able to link two different novels together and address the social issue that could still be on going but is much less common than the times of slavery etc.
This is a very reflective project because it raised awareness about our society and could be a message to learn from our past. This relates to the ESLOs, how I was able to be concerned about the community and be able to express my opinions to try and make it a better place. It also initiates the use of technology in a positive way because I was able to do research and be able to dig deeper into the meanings of the actions or speech the characters had. This project also provided lots of active learning because there were many new ideas being introduced and I was able to acknowledge them. Lastly, it is another project that shows that I am a strategic learner because I was able to plan without wasting time and complete the project.

Time Writing Quiz
One of my proudest work was a Time Writing quiz, where I was able to analyze two poems and express my ideas on how the poems were both conflicting but also supporting the ideas of "protection." The first poem was called "Barred Owl" by Richard Wilbur and the second, "The History Teacher" by Billy Collins. The poem demonstrated two ideas of protection and it signified that the protection in Wilbur's poem was a protection that is suitable and does not harm the child. However, the protection in Collin's poem was not suitable and would cause destructions, which were mentioned in the poem. This was because the protection that the students got in Collin's poem, was protection from acknowledging the cruelty of the world and they were addressed that violence such as war was not a big deal or that it was not harmful. This lead to the students themselves becoming cruel on the playground.
This time writing quiz gave insight on the real world and sparked a debate about how a child should be protected. It followed the ESLOS of being concerned about our community and trying our best to help improve or even address the problems. Without being aware about the issues, there could not be solutions. It also allowed us to apply what we know to analyze, evaluate, and solve problems.

In this quarter we learned about Sonnets, both Petrarchan and Shakespearean sonnet. So I wrote my own sonnet using the inspiration from a previous incident.
This sonnet has 14 lines that describes a skin being scrapped and so it is 'raw and pink'. I was injured and so I decided to describe the feelings or idea through the sonnet. It portrays how painful a small injury is and that it could teach us about life and how we can learn to grow. ESLOS: This project allows us to become strategic learners because I can plan without wasting time, use technology in a creative way and does not harm others and to do research. This work also shows how I am an innovative thinker because I created a creative and original product. |
"Miss Brill "
In AP Literature, we read a short story called "Miss Brill". The story was about a women who was portrayed as lonely and had no social interaction with anyone. We analyzed the short story and wrote an essay, the essay I wrote was focussed on how Katherine Mansfield depicts the pure and truthful meaning of loneliness.
This is one of the work that I feel most proud of because I felt connected to the characters in the story. It allowed me to write something that I felt dear to my heart and that it was a very unique story so I enjoyed writing about it. ESLOS: This particular work reflects on being altruistic global citizen where I am concerned about the well being of the community and that people should understand that everyone feels empty inside but it is having each other that keeps us full of happiness. Also, it shows articulate communicators where I am able to Tell what we understand and how we understand to different social groups and explain my points further in the essay. |
